Public TAFE institute

Competency checks and hands-on support across a public institute

Six college-level audits of training and assessment strategies, assessment and trainer credentials, followed by targeted support for teaching teams.

The client

A large public TAFE institute with several colleges, each managing its own qualifications, teaching teams and assessment tools.

What they asked for

A college-by-college check that the core of training and assessment practice was sound, and practical help for teaching teams where it needed work.

Competency checks in six colleges

We ran six one-day audits on site, one for each college, each with its own report. Every audit focused on three areas:

  • training and assessment strategies
  • assessment, including tools, judgements and the evidence behind them
  • trainer and assessor credentials and currency

Keeping each audit short and focused meant every college had findings it could act on straight away.

Targeted support for teaching teams

The college reports shaped the next stage. We worked directly with teaching teams:

  • short workshops with ICT teachers, and with business, tourism and accounting teachers, working through their own assessments
  • mapping and validation of 8 to 10 units for the Trades College
  • review and quality assurance of draft online learning before release
  • assessment validation and general compliance advice as needed

Other advice

We also advised on obligations for international students under CRICOS, and on the institute’s partnership arrangements.

What the client received

  • Six college audit reports, with risk-rated findings, the evidence sighted and improvement strategies
  • Workshops and working sessions built around each team’s own materials
  • Mapping and validation reports, and quality assurance feedback on online learning
